College of Commerce, Patna is one of the oldest constituent college of Magadh  University, Bodh Gaya, Bihar (India). It was established in the year 1949 with only commerce teaching in the beginning, and hence, this name. Initially, the college got affiliation from Bihar University, Muzaffarpur in 1952. Science teaching was first introduced into the college in 1957 followed by teaching in subjects of Arts in the year 1960 and in those of Law in 1963.

Currently, the College is imparting undergraduate and post-graduate education to students in many subjects of Arts, Science and Commerce with adequately developed infrastructure including well furnished laboratories, library and spacious classrooms. Vocational education is available in Biotechnology, Office management/Secretarial Practices and Functional English. The college management proposes to start many such courses in future.

 

Department of Botany

Biology teaching  was inaugurated with Department of Biology in 1957 in College of Commerce, Patna. In 1963, the Biology department was bifurcated into two independent departments of Botany and Zoology. After maintaining exemplary standard in  Intermediate and B.Sc. (Pass) education for many years, B.Sc. (Honours) teaching was launched in 1968 with infrastructure for only 16 students in the beginning. P.G. teaching was started in 1984 when Magadh University chose to develop it as a P.G. centre. Apart from imparting undergraduate and higher education of desirable quality to students, research has been on the list of top priorities in the department. Several students working on diverse projects have got Ph.D. degree and excelled in life. Excellence in classroom teaching, tutorial classes, personalized guidance, discipline, desirable orientation of students and research has been the hallmark of the department. It can boast of a perfected system of interaction between students and teachers. Seminars and symposia on specific topics are periodically organized for the benefit of students of undergraduate and post-graduate classes.

 

 

School of Biotechnology

Department of Botany decided to develop a separate centre for teaching and research in Biotechnology in 2001 with B.Sc Biotechnology programme. It is named ‘School of Biotechnology’. M.Sc. (General biotechnology) will start in 2005. As this school aspires to produce graduates, post-graduates and Ph.Ds. with outstanding calibre and aptitude in different areas of Biotechnology such as genetic engineering, production of transgenic organisms, protein engineering, tissue culture, immuno – biotechnology, environmental biotechnology etc., we put special stress on practical training to students. Infrastructure in these modern areas of research is our priority.
